Hand Carved Teak Four Door Almirah with Crowned Pediment

Most furniture gets bought for a house. An almirah like this gets bought for a family, which is a different decision with a different timescale and everyone in Rajasthan understands the distinction without being told. This is the wedding piece, the one that arrives before the marriage and stays long after the children have houses of their own, and ours comes out of our Jodhpur workshop, in the city where carved furniture has been the family trade for generations.

Four panelled doors in solid teak, each one carrying a pierced lattice frieze across the top and a carved medallion at its centre, a pineapple held in a scrolled wreath with ribbons falling below it, and the pineapple is not decoration for decoration's sake, it's the old carver's symbol of welcome and plenty, repeated four times across the front like a promise.

Above it all sits a scalloped and crowned pediment with a carved scroll centrepiece, the kind of top that makes a wardrobe read as architecture, and below, a carved apron rolls along the base down to small cabriole feet. The handles are crystal and brass, cool in the hand against all that warm timber.
