Painted Landscape Cabinet

There is a tradition of furniture that refuses to be furniture and insists on being a picture, and the painted cabinet is its best-loved form. The case is a simple, sound box of a cabinet, square legs, two short drawers across the top on iron pulls, two doors below meeting at the centre, the timber finished in a soft blue-green that has been rubbed back at every edge and corner to let the wood and older colour show through.

Each door carries a hand-painted scene in muted greens, reds and blues and each drawer front continues the landscape in miniature, the colours softened and crazed to read as old, so the piece looks like it has hung a picture on itself for a century.
