Revolving Bookcase, Three Tiers on Cross Base

The revolving bookcase solved a problem that still exists, the chair is comfortable, the book you want is across the room and getting up is a defeat. Somebody in the last century's clubs and reading rooms decided the books should do the moving instead, so the bookcase went on a spindle and the best chairs in India have had one standing beside them ever since. Sit down, reach out, turn and the volume you wanted arrives at your hand.

This one holds the form exactly. Three square tiers stack up a central column, each tier divided into slatted bays on all four faces, the slats carrying books spine-out and keeping the whole tower open to the air and the eye. The timber is the star, dark and deeply striped, the kind of grain that looks painted on until you touch it, brought up to a quiet polish. Below, the column drops into a four-arm cross base ending in turned bun feet, planted enough that a full load of books turns without any wobble. Twelve bays in all and every one of them faces you eventually.
