Sculptural Burl Walnut Armchair

A design concept, shown here as a rendering, offered as a commission from our Jodhpur workshop. What you see is the idea, what you receive is the chair our bench builds to it, in real timber, with the small differences real timber insists on.

The idea is a seat that behaves like a shell. A single scooped form in figured burl, the grain swirling across it the way burl does, rises at the back into a swept crest that curls over like a wave deciding not to break and sits inside a shaped ebonised frame, dark and glossy, that carries down into four splayed sabre legs edged in gilt. A small medallion at the front of the seat rail, a run of gilt vine tracing the rear legs, and nothing else, the drama is in the curve and the contrast, the honey burl against the black.

Straight talk and for a commission it's the whole listing. This chair is made to order, which means a conversation first, timber choice, the exact burl available at the time, dimensions to your body and room, finish, price and timeline all agreed in writing before a chisel moves.

Figured burl is a natural material and no two sheets match, so your chair's grain will be its own, not the render's. Lead time runs to months, not weeks and once work begins the piece is yours, as our Terms explain. It is a sculpture you can sit in and it should be commissioned the way sculpture is.
