Its ancestors kept their ambitions modest, a frame, four legs, the charpai's honest ropes. Then the bedside table got absorbed, here it lifts out of the armrest on a swing arm and hovers over your lap. Then the almirah's locker moved in, an electronic safe behind a panel.

Then the fridge sent a small delegation, an insulated bar in the headboard that keeps the water or something better, cold through the night. Somewhere along the way it learned light, sound and electricity, a gooseneck lamp, built-in speakers, a socket and USB panel at the pillow.

Conservation Notes

Upholstered in easy-wipe leatherette, found in master bedrooms with a wall socket within reach, which it genuinely requires and in bachelor flats where it constitutes the entire furniture plan. Wipe with a damp cloth, keep sharp things off the upholstery, and expect the shahi aaram to spoil you for ordinary beds within the week.
