Every grand piece of Indian furniture has a famous ancestor. This one descends from the most ordinary and the most loved: the chowki.

From the Chowki

For centuries the low wooden chowki did everything in a Rajasthani ghar. It was the seat by the chulha, the stand under the water pot, the platform the pooja sat on, the stool a grandmother owned so completely that no one else dared use it. Small, square, four-legged, indestructible. Furniture historians barely bother with it because it was everywhere, which is exactly the credential that matters.

The Drawer It Learned

This table is the chowki grown to bedside height and taught one modern trick, a single drawer for the saaman that otherwise colonises the bed's edge, the spectacles, the charger, the balm, the small peti of things every bedside accumulates. Solid teak, plank top, splayed legs and a choice of four drawer faces, slatted, plain, carved or grooved, so a pair can even sit two different moods on two sides of one bed.

Where It Serves

Beside the bed first, naturally, and just as well beside a sofa arm holding the chai or under a window with a plant on duty. Wipe with a dry cloth, oil the teak once a year and it will outwork everything else in the room, as its ancestor always did.
