Carved Jaali Side Table with Spindle Gallery

Before this was a table, it's parts had other jobs and all of them were in Rajasthan. The pierced fan in each panel is jaali work, the carver's answer to desert heat, cut through the wood so air could pass where sun could not, the same breathing screens that cool haveli windows from Shekhawati to Jodhpur.

The little row of spindles running under the apron is a baramda railing shrunk to tabletop scale, the balustrade your elbows would find on any old upper balcony. And the turned legs come off the kharad, the turner's lathe, a Marwar craft old enough that whole families still carry it as a surname.

Somewhere along the way a carpenter realised that if you took the window, the railing and the balcony post and built them small, you got a table that carried the whole haveli in miniature. This one continues that habit.

Set it beside a sofa to hold the lamp and the evening's book or between two chairs where the chai tray lands. Square, knee height, happy in modern rooms precisely because everything on it is old. Dust the piercing with a soft brush, wipe the top dry and it asks nothing else.
