Description

Dining set, sang-e-marmar top, early 21st century. Recovered intact. The stone outlived every argument held across it.

The Exhibit

A rectangular slab of marble, cream run through with veins of gold, each slab patterned by the earth and so never repeated, resting on two sculpted wooden pedestals that curve like cupped hands. Around it, six upholstered chairs, offered in four dressings from cream to walnut brown, so the same table suits a pale room or a deep one.

Where It Was Found

In the dining corner facing the kitchen, naturally, though specimens served equally in open-plan halls where the table anchors the whole room. Future scholars will note the faint warmth at the centre of the stone, evidence of Sunday biryani and the rounak of a full table on festival nights, when the barkat was counted in extra chairs squeezed in.

Conservation Notes

Marble drinks what it's given, so coasters under glasses, a wipe at spills the same hour, never the next morning and a mat under anything hot. The chairs take a damp cloth. Seats six comfortably, eight affectionately.
