Teak Bed with Pierced Carved Headboard

Two painted ceramic tiles are set into this headboard, and they are the only colour on the whole piece.

The headboard is built as a run of framed panels rather than one solid board. Pierced carved fretwork fills four of them, foliate work cut right through so the wall reads behind it. Two square ceramic tiles sit between, glazed and painted with a floral centre. Turned spindle galleries close both ends of the run, and a row of slim iron rods drops below the whole thing into the bottom rail.

Corner posts are heavy, fluted down the shaft, and topped with a ribbed melon finial. Four of them, matched at head and foot.

The footboard drops low, a single rail carried on a gallery of small turned balusters, so the bed reads open from the door instead of walling itself off.

Give it a plain wall. Panelled or papered behind, the pierced work has nothing to sit against and the carving turns to noise.
